Do you covet the pearly skin of the old time starlets and the celebrities of today? Take a deep breath as I'll guide you through the different skin types and what foundations to use with it to turn any dull face into a blank canvas. (No retouching required!)

What do you want your foundation to do for you?

Foundations have different kinds of coverage depending on how much powder it contains. It is there for vital to choose the correct type according to your needs and skin type.

LIQUID FOUNDATION

May contain a lot or a little powder. It is easy to use with you fingers, a sponge or a foundation brush

COMPACT CREAM FOUNDATION

Often contains a lot of powder and will therefore give much coverage. Best used with a moist sponge.

POWDER FOUNDATION

Contains more powder than liquids. Will give a quick and even coverage, but may also clog pores. Thorough facial cleansing after use is highly necessary.

Moisture cream with added tint. This thin and light cream will not cover much, but evens out skin tones.

WHAT SKIN TYPE ARE YOU?

The perfect foundation must also go well with your skin type. The most common skin types are oily, dry and combination skin.

OILY SKIN

Facial treatment

First of all, do not try to dry out an oily skin! This will fool it into producing more oil. An oily skin needs a good moisturizer that does not contain any grease or oil ingredient. Use an exfoliater 1-2 times per week to get rid of dead skin cells. An oily skin has trouble doing this on its own and the dead skin cells will therefore get pulled back into the pores and clog them up more.

Foundation choices

Use a product that contains a fair amount of powder that will matte down shiny skin and will let the foundation colour stay on longer. If you do not wish for a lot of coverage, try using a Tinted Moisturizer and finish up with a translucent powder to get that shine away. If you’re really having problem with getting your foundation to stay put, try a matting primer underneath. 

Body shop matte it The primer will both matt down and pull the foundation closer to the skin.

DRY SKIN

Facial treatment

A dry skin obviously needs a lot of moisture in forms of creams, but if your skin is flaking off you also need a fat ingredient to allow the skin to bind the moisture. To exfoliate a dry skin is a big help, but remember to use a product for dry or sensitive skin and maximum 1 time per week. By doing so the dead skin cells will be removed instead of stealing moisture from the healthy skin.

Foundation choices

Use products that DOESN’t contain a lot of powder. There are many liquid foundations that are made especially for dry skin, but I.D. Bare Minerals polwer foundationworks wonders on a dry skin- just remember to blend the polwer well in the lid to make it melt completely.

 


COMBINATION SKIN

Facial treatment

Remember to treat the different parts of your skin in an accurate way as a combination skin often will have dry cheeks and a more oily t-zone. If so, apply a slightly greasier moisturizer to the cheeks and use your normal moisturizer over the rest. In general the most important thing for a combination skin is that is gets a good cleansing and treatment routine.

Foundation choices

A combination skin will stand most of the different foundation types. If some parts of your skin are extra dry or oily, simply use the advices for these skin types to these areas.



WHAT SKIN TONE ARE YOU?

This is where the magic is! Who haven’t bought tons of foundations that have a perfect consistence and coverage, but will just not match the rest of your body’s’ skin colour? The trick is to find the undertone to your skin colour. Disregard freckles or sporadic shades of red that may be due to heat or other skin conditions. The undertone to your skin colour is the colour you want for you foundation, regardless if it dark or light.

The most common undertone is yellow, but there are also those rear red tones. This occurs often to the very pale (for instant red heads) or to those of a very dark colour (for instant some African skin) When you have found your correct undertone, all that is left is to get the correct shade of light or dark. A foundation cream is always best tried on between your jaw and your neck, and will nearly disappear when the colour fits perfect.

HOW TO PRIME YOUR SKIN

To make a foundation stay on even and for the entire day it is important to make a good base. A primer will enhance the skin and allow it to accept the foundation better

The easiest way to prime is to simply cleanse the skin and apply moisturizer. Let it dry inn for 10 minutes and follow with the foundation.

The best way is to exfoliate your skin 1-2 times per week, cleanse your skin and apply moisturiser followed by a foundation primer. This will even out the surface of your skin and let the foundation get closer and therefore stay on longer.

HOW TO APPLY

Foundation can be applied by the use of your fingers, a sponge or a foundation brush

Common facts of the tree:

Work evenly and quick with the product. Don’t let it dry in on one side of your face before you start with the other side.

Don’t let any foundation get caught in you hair line or eyebrows if you want to avoid orange streaks.

Don’t forget your neck! Use a thinner portion and let it fade towards your chest.

If you are using you FINGERS, remember to wash them free form dirt and oils. Apply small dots of foundation to your forehead, nose, chin and cheek and smear on like a moisturizer.

If you are using a SPUNGE apply the foundation with quick press and lift motions. Start along the jaw and work your way over the face.

A FOUNDATION BRUSH is an increasable aid that will save you both time and product. The brush almost works like a paint brush across the face. Remember to allow you final strokes to have a downwards direction to make facial hairs stay put.

Concealer


A concealer is similar to a foundation, but contains often more powder and is therefore more covering. It is therefore not meant to be used all over the face, but only to parts with need of extra attention. Common places are under the eyes, around the nose, the chin and to acne areas. The colour of your concealer should be the exact same tone as your foundation, only ½ tone lighter. Pat it gently and thin into your skin with your finger. If you smear the concealer to much, it will just move back and forth over your skin. Remember to even out the edges so that is blends with the foundation.

Compact Concealer: Contains more powder and gives the most coverage


Liquid Concealer: Contains less powder, but will still give a good coverage. Great for dry skin.




Highlighter Pen: A highlighter pen is meant to lighten without giving a lot of coverage. It creates an illuminating effect on the face that is any starlets’’ best friend. Try it over your cheek bone, the middle of your forehead, down your nose bone and right above your upper lip. Tips! Blend a highlighter pen with you concealer to make the concealer lighter!


POWDER

You should always follow up a foundation with a brush of powder. The powder does give a matting effect, but the foremost reason to use it is to seal in the foundation and make it last all dat. Powders come in both loose and compact forms.

Coloured powder gives a little more coverage and visibility.

Translucent powder is colourless and thin and will therefore appear more natural.

WHY DO YOU FEEL PALE WITH THE CORRECT FOUNDATION COLOUR?

Many do feel a bit pale when they find the perfect foundation colour. This is because the foundation neutralizes any colour interruptions you previously were used to seeing, such as red cheeks. In stead of switching to a darker foundation, remember that this is just a first step in a make up process and as soon as little miss blush comes along with the rest of the make-up bag gang, there will be plenty of colour to go around!.

• Tips:


1. The skin colour changes between summer and winter. Invest in two foundations that are suited to your undertone, but one shade lighter and one shade darker. Mix them together to always have the perfect foundation for you!


2. Apply some foundation into your moisturizer to create you own Tinted moisturizer. It won’t cover a lot, but give your face a more even colour and glow.


3. Never test a foundation on your hand. The skin type and colour is not the same as your face!

It's a jungel of products out there, and it's just not always easy to know what to use or how to use it. Here are 3 products which are a sure winner for a professional or an enthusiast!

1. Face and Body Foundation from MAC.Color range from palest pink to darkest brown. Can be used on face and body as the name reveals and has a coverage starting at light with one coat, but can easily build up for television full coverage as well.

3. Lancôme Long Lasting Softening concealer has an AMAZING texture and perfect coverage without taking away the skin. The biggest flaw is that it comes in 3 shades, retarded, but it fits my skin and most of my models perfectly. Anytime i have a model with a different skin color, I simply mix in a suitable foundation or other concelear just to benefit from the texture.

How to shape an eyebrow!

When shaping an eyebrow using a tweezer there are 3 easy steps to follow to makeup sure the angle and size of your eyebrow ends up perfect for you!

A) Place a pencil next to the nose wing, let it cross through the INNER eye corner and mark the spot when it crosses the eyebrow. This is where the eyebrow should START.

B) Place the pencil next to the nose wing again, this time letting it cross on the outside of the IRIS and mark the spot when it crosses the eyebrow. This is where the eyebrow should be ARCHED.

C) Lastly, place the pencil next to the nose wing and let it cross the OUTER eye corner and mark the spot when it crosses the eyebrow. This is where the eyebrow should END.

The reason why these 3 steps makes the perfect eyebrow for ANY one is because it is based around the measurement of the individual eye, nose and eye brow. You simply can't go wrong!

It seems like a very simple question, but for anyone seriously considering a life as a makeup artist, it is always worth the extra chain of thought before settling down with a decision and going full throttle ahead. With all the hype around artists and fashion stylist with shows like Top Model, Project Runway and Rachel Zoe the secret is definitely out- a life in the fashion and beauty industry can absolutely be very glamorous. If we all worked in the field just for the champagne and canapés, we would be bored out of our minds within a year. ü  Do I want to work 9-5, Monday to Friday without a chance of change in my work structure? – If your answer is NO, then you’re off to a great start as the work of a Makeup artist is so varied that we rarely know their structure until the months before. However, we are able to take control and make decisions regarding which hours to work, but most makeup artists thrive on the choice to work Saturdays and take Tuesday and Wednesday off instead.

ü  Am I living to work or working to live? – as a makeup artist the answer should be living to work- because the photo shoots, films, teaching or consulting we do hardly feels like work! This is what we love to do and what makes us happy, so the hours or the location are minor details that more often than not make our lives magnificently flexible.

ü  Do I want to become a makeup artist to make myself look hot?- as a makeup artist, we should of course always look great as we represent our own products basically, however, the focus should always be on the client, model or celebrity. If we are more into our own looks than theirs, it means that we don´t really care. There is a big misunderstanding when it comes to makeup and it´s artist, regarding it being purely superficial. But the look on a clients face, when they look into the mirror after our work is done, and they feel a sense of pride and joy about their looks, and finally see the beauty on the outside that we saw on the inside- that is truly the most un-superficial moment where one person is helping another.

ü  Does makeup artistry make me feel calm, excited and happy all at once?- This is probably the most important question, as what we choose to spend most of our time doing, should be something that creates all those emotions at ones. The great thing about recognizing those emotions while working is that it is the number one reassurance that you will be successful! Passion leads to talent, and talent leads to success and when we are 100% passionate about the work we do, we will always succeed and be the best.

ü  Do I want to be my own boss, freelance and run a successful business? - If your answer is not YES, the career might not be the best suited for you. As mentioned before, when we have so much passion which leads into talent for a craft, it is inevitable that we will be successful. So if these things are something you do not want in your life, it would be better to get out now before the jobs and money comes pouring in!

The secret makeup tip on how to make the perfect blue and smoky eye!

Applying Eye Makeup: The blue and smoky eye is such a great variation from the original black smoky eye because it makes it more playful and fresh. You don´t have to use a clear or strong shade of blue: more often than not, the most becoming blue colors are those with a speck of brown in them to make the color more deep and demure. If you really want the look to be similar to the trends from the runway, make sure you choose the metallic textured eye shadows.

• Apply a lighter shade of blue from your eyelash line and up to your global. Use a clean brush to soften the edges upwards and outwards. Remember to use the same shadow under your eyes and connect the eye shadows on the inner and outer corners of the eyes.
• Use a black eyeliner pencil and draw an intense line around the entire eye, following the lash line. Soften the outer edges of the eyeliner using a clean, small brush. Make sure the eyeliner is 100% intense between the eyelashes and fill in your inner eye rims for that sultry gaze.
• Complete the look with a dark and metallic blue eye shadow from the eyelashes over the eyeliner and up to the global, making sure that you stop right before you first color does. Finish it all off with tons of mascara.

After working with models for Fashion Week and numerous photo shoots during the past 6 years, I´ve picked up a thing or two when it comes to Fashion and makeup models secrets to great skin and individual makeup.

The life of a fashion and makeup model can take its toll on the skin. Not only does it have to stand the agony of applying and removing tons of different makeup products during one day, but even worse is the stress factor that comes with constant travelling, time management during a shoot and not to mention the hectic backstage- life during fashion week. But still, as a makeup artist it is vital that a fashion or makeup models´ skin looks their best for any job, so how can they possibly make this happen? – And if the guiding lines the fashion and makeup models live by works, would they not do absolutely wonders for us mere mortal girls? Here are the BEST 5 TIPS I have picked up from several fashion and makeup models during my time working with them.

•ONLY WEAR MAKEUP WHEN ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY
When your skin is constantly exposed to heavy makeup and cleansing products, you really need to pick your battles when it comes to wearing makeup in private. But on the other side it is actually very refreshing to only wear makeup privately to those special occasions as the transformation will be bigger and you will feel more extraordinary in addition to letting your skin breath in the meantime. A great and classic fashion and makeup models trick is to only focus on one facial feature like just a red lip, just defined and darkened eyebrows or just smoky eyes.


•STICK TO YOUR CLEANSING AND MOISTURIZING ROUTINES
It´s the simplest thing to do, yet so many of skip the sacred morning and night cleansing + moisturizing routine. But I promise you, if you use a professional skin care branded cleanser, moisturizer and eye cream every morning and night along with an exfoliater once a week, your skin will always look it´s best.

•LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
Your body knows when it needs sleep, water and food so there is no use in fighting it as your body will fight you back. We must never forget that one of the primary purposes of the skin itself is to give us a signal if something is wrong internally i.e. your skin will look sick on the outside if it is not healthy on the inside. Go to sleep at a reasonable time and take an afternoon nap if needed, drink water throughout the day and eat when you´re hungry. It doesn´t get any clearer then that!

•YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT
It´s not rocket science to figure out that fashion and makeup models have to watch what they eat, but much like an athlete it´s all about awareness when it comes to your diet and what the different food groups will do to you. It is never ok to cut out eating. Doing so will actually stress your skin and hair out and turn them into a dry and discolored disaster, but to be careful with fried food and carbohydrates is a nutrition rule we all can benefit from.

•BEWARE OF CIGARETTES AND POLLUTION
The greatest enemy a fashion and makeup model has regarding their skin is definitely cigarettes and pollution. The fumes coming from a cigarette you smoke yourself or from someone sitting next to you will damage your skin- there is no question or doubt about that fact. If you smoke yourself it will firstly affect your lip and eye area with wrinkles, but it will also mess with your natural moisture level. Pollution from cities, clubbing and not to mention air planes can be prevented by using protection spray regularly. The best thing is to clean and moisturize your face immediately after returning home from a city walk or trip.
